    • Daria A letter by Dr Daria who attended Dr Shawn Pourgol's presentation at the first public meeting of the Coalition for the Regulation of Manual Osteopathy in Ontario:

"It was my pleasure to be a witness of the historical moment in regulation of osteopathy in Ontario, everything was to the point; your presentation was nourishing to the brains and inspirational to the soul. I am, as always, proud to see you clearing new ways for osteopathy as a profession. I believe that due to your efforts manual Osteopathy not only will be elevated as a profession, but also will take its honorable place in the hearts of the public. I was delighted to see how manual osteopaths in the end of the presentation became your devoted listeners. I was delighted to notice in their eyes sparkles of inspiration you generously planted. I am sure that soon everyone will realize the significance of osteopathic regulation and necessity of a unified approach in this matter. Your hard work will be appreciated."

from chronic pain. Osteopathy offers the most effective treatment system for chronic
pain. Most patients manual osteopaths see are the last resort cases. They truly do
miracles with their hands, treating cases where all else failed.

Nathan Lambert A beautiful post by Nathan Lambert, one of Professor Pourgol's students in St Catharines, Ontario (Canada):

Dr. Pourgol, I owe you everything!

Through your online lectures you taught me to love myself, have faith in myself and what I can accomplish!

Now life obviously isn't just fixed, and "the blur" won't ever just disappear, but a love for Osteopathy has pushed me to heal my soul so that I can better impact others. The core Osteopathic idea that structure governs function speaks to more than just the practice but now to my life. Because of Osteopathy I have my life.

    • Chiropractors love osteopathy!

Dr Liza Egbogah DC DOMP We have many chiropractors who join us to study osteopathy. Dr Liza Egbogah, DC, DOMP studied chiropractic at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College followed by osteopathy at the National Academy of Osteopathy. Dr Egbogah owns a multidisciplinary clinic in Toronto (Canada) as well as a line of stylish orthopedic shoes that are fashionable while being comfortable (http://www.drlizaegbogah.com/dr-liza-pump/). These pumps have been showcased on numerous TV shows in Canada. Many celebrities are her clients. We are proud to have her as our alumna.

Here is what Dr Egbogah posted on her blog about why she chose to study osteopathy:

The main reason I chose to pursue osteopathy instead of chiropractic is that while chiropractic focuses primarily on spinal manipulation, osteopathy involves head to toe treatment to help the body work more efficiently. Whether someone has a wrist fracture, back pain or a knee injury, manual osteopaths will treat the entire body to optimize functioning. I have always felt that with the multitude of interconnections in the body, addressing the entire system is the only way to effectively treat.

      Hello Dr. Pourgol:

I hope this message finds you in the best of health!
My name is Brandon Alleman and I recently completed the D.O. program with the National University of Medical Sciences.
I wanted to take a moment to send a heartfelt thank you to YOU and all of the Professors and staff involved in the D.O. Program.
I was highly impressed with the entire curriculum. I was particularly fond of the business courses (Business and Clinic Management).
Your lectures in these courses were full of practical and insightful information that I will use for years to come. I did enjoy the process of compiling my thesis which is basically support for manual therapy for the cranial nerves as it relates to chronic pain in the somatic framework.
I plan to take all that I have learned and begin integrating it into my practice on all levels. As you stated numerous times in your lectures...think laterally, dream big, and always strive to get better at what you are doing. My plan is to do exactly that.
You are a true inspiration to the Manual Osteopathy profession and have had a profound impact on my Life and my work. I do not have words to express my full gratitude.
Thank you for your tireless work to bring Manual Osteopathy to the forefront of true healthcare.
      Yours in Health and Happiness,
Brandon J. Alleman, OMP, IK, HHP, D.PSc, DO

We are proud that because of the osteopathic education we provide, most people of the Caribbean islands now have access to osteopathic care, this wonderful miraculous profession that offers one of the best treatments available for chronic pain.

    • Our Alumni Have 98% Job Satisfaction Rate

Dr Ernest Makram Our graduates provide the best osteopathic care possible, as we focus on techniques that are systematic, global, and scientifically proven to be effective. Our alumni routinely help chronic last resort cases that could not be helped by other health professionals.
This is why our graduates have a 98% job satisfaction rate, the highest among all other health professionals.
Here is a post by Dr Ernest Makram, MD, DOMP, DO (Spain) (from Oakville, Ontario, Canada), a graduate of National Academy of Osteopathy & National University of Medical Sciences (Spain):
“Today I had a patient, a kinesiology graduate who works as an athletic therapist. This patient was treated regularly by a chiropractor and manual osteopath (not a graduate of NAO or NUMSS), it was a challenge for me, but the response after I finished the session was "wow" (I wrote the word as it is said), I had a very good feeling that I was able to help this patient.”
    • Try manual osteopathy before surgery

Dr mehrdad Darvish Dr Mehrdad Darvish an orthopedic surgeon with post specialty fellowship in ankle & foot surgery from Germany is one of our osteopathy students.
In a post published recently, Dr Darvish mentions that since incorporating osteopathic care into his surgical practice, the number of surgeries as well as injections in his practice has decreased which not only decreases risks, surgical complications and pain for patients; it also reduces health care costs.
Osteopathy does wonders in treating chronic pain. Physicians & surgeons can cut a large number of invasive medical procedures by adding osteopathic care to their practices.
Here is the post from Dr Darvish:
I am Dr. Mehrdad Dervish, an orthopedic specialist from the University of Shahid Beheshti in Tehran, and a foot and ankle surgery, fracture and sports injury fellowship from Germany.
From 2012, I became acquainted with the discipline of osteopathy. Osteopathy is very effective in improving chronic pain, and can be very helpful in cases such as chronic low back pain or shoulder pain, and even pelvic and knee pain that do not respond to common treatments.
I use these techniques in my surgical practice to decrease the risk of surgery and its complications on my patients. These techniques can lower the cost of treatments for patients and eliminate potential dangers of surgery, such as infection and bleeding, anesthesia and hospitalization.
Patients are very pleased with osteopathy and even the use of injections have been reduced in my practice in some cases. This method is complementary to orthopedic techniques and is a substitute for more aggressive methods.
    • Did you know we have alumni in 68 countries including Vietnam?

Alina Turturica We have expanded osteopathy to more countries than any other school in the past 140 years. Here is a post from one of our students in Vietnam.

My name is Stephane Laporte. I live in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. I am a DOMP from NAO and a BSc (O) and DO (Spain) from NUMSS. I am also a Certified Personal Trainer (ACSM) and a Certified Triathlon Coach (ITCA).
To me, finding a recognized school was of primordial importance. The quality of the teaching is primordial. Over the 4 years that I have spent with the National Academy of Osteopathy and the National University of Medical Sciences, I have seen teachers that gave me a strong will to study and some highly skilled professors who would always challenge me to study more. I am now stuck in that routine of self-education, on top of the materials provided by the school, and I love it! I learn everyday more and more fascinating things and feel like I understand the body so much better than I thought. Or more like: I understand how much I didn't understand the human body before.

I enjoyed that the first year, the online videos were posted in a structured daily manner, to ease into this new contemporary way of learning. I enjoyed that the hours were flexible due to the distance learning nature of the program I chose. However, this did not mean less hours of studying at all!

As I went through the program, the videos got better, the fact that you can now send videos of yourself to your teachers for review, the homework given by the professors, the hands on classes, all of this contributes to me feeling proud of studying at NUMSS.

I still have a few hours to do to complete my 1,000 hours of clinical training, but I was lucky enough to have attended many workshops and trainings in clinics available in my region.

What I didn't expect was very useful business education, how to set up a clinic, how to manage it and cope with the legal aspects of it. It's so important, because once you've graduated, what do you do? You need to have a plan so you can use your talents in real life. If you can't fill up the paperwork to be able to legally work, all those skills you've spent so much time to learn might go to waste. The University makes sure you are not alone, with a strong business education and a solid and hyperactive alumni network.

I have applied for another degree, but have been on waiting list for a year, that's how in-demand NUMSS is.
    • A post from a student of Dr Pourgol, Alina Turturica

      Alina Turturica

OMG, Dr. Pourgol. I've watched your lecture about the power of self suggestion. I learned new things about the functioning of conscious and subconscious minds, but also laughed so hard tears ran down my face. I enjoy studying so much. I can't wait to wake up every morning and turn on my laptop.

You already inspire me on so many levels I look forward to getting to know you better and starting the program. If I thought I was excited to study osteopathy before, now I am 100% convinced that this is what I would like to do for the rest of my life.

I look forward to starting the class in September. I wish you a pleasant evening!

The above post was from a student of Dr Pourgol, Alina Turturica, a massage therapist from Romania. Dr Pourgol’s business lectures are one reason why are alumni become successful health professionals upon graduation.

      Stephane Laporte DOMP DO Vietnam

We have many students working in hospitals as physiotherapists & physicians. However until now we just had one student who was working as an osteopath in a hospital in UAE. Now we found out another student, Stéphane Laporte, DOMP, DO (a graduate of National University of Medical Sciences & National Academy of Osteopathy) has secured a position as an osteopath in Vietnam. We are so proud of him!

This is an email sent today to Dr Pourgol by Stephane:

This email is to send you a heartfelt thank you for your guidance in the field of Osteopathy. Thanks to you and your education, I am now working in a major JCI accredited hospital in the physical therapy and rehabilitation department. It's a great experience, working in a team of therapists. This is of course the very beginning, and I look forward to grow fast in personal development and to apply the lessons from the NAO & NUMSS business lectures."

      Stéphane.

    • Why Osteopathic Osteoarticular Techniques are so effective?

Why Osteopathic Osteoarticular Techniques are so effective?

Osteopathic spinal osteoarticular techniques are proven through scientific research to cause neurophysiological effects resulting in hypoalgesia (local and/or distal), sympathoexcitation, reduction in spinal stiffness, heterogeneous in location and timing, and improved muscle function.

These techniques also produce increased nociceptive flexion reflex threshold, improved posture, decreased concentration of substance P, and improved sway index.

The evidence for effectiveness of osteopathic osteoarticular techniques suggests involvement of an endogenous pain inhibition system mediated by the central nervous system.

    • For Canadian NUMSS Students

      Current Canadian NUMSS students:

As you were told during business lectures you are entitled to tuition, education and textbooks tax credits as both NAO and NUMSS are accepted by the Canadian Revenue Agency (applicable forms will be send to you from your school that you have to use when doing your taxes).

You were also told you that you could use all the expenses (travel, tuition, textbook costs, rent, etc) you incur to become a manual osteopath as your business expenses to reduce your personal income tax. To do so you must own a company (either sole, partnership or Inc) BEFORE you graduate.

Best way is to register a numbered company. Please note you are entitled to use these expenses ONLY if you study towards making money in the future. If you study osteopathy just to increase your knowledge without planning to ever work as a manual osteopath in any capacity then you cannot use these educational expenses as business expenses.

The results indicated that in the same day, after watching the skill being taught online vs live in the classroom, those classroom students learned the skill better. However after one week, the online students performed the skill clearly better than the campus students.

Asset Protection Tip (from the 4th Semester Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Business Management Course)

It is not recommended for physiotherapists to purchase the building their clinic is located at, in their own name or their clinic name. Instead they should open another company, preferably a numbered incorporation (Inc) or a limited liability (Ltd) that acts as an investment company.

This new company can be in the name of the physiotherapist. The building (office) where the clinic is located can be purchased by this investment company. The physiotherapist then rents the space from the investment company and pays rent at a rent that is the market value in that area. This rent is tax deductible by the way. check out our blog here

    • New Employment Trend for Osteopaths

osteopathy-for-personal-trainers With the popularity of osteopathy with patients and its ability to help athletes function better, National Academy of Osteopathy decided that osteopathy could be the right fit inside gyms across Canada and USA.
NAO approached a number of gyms to send their personal and fitness trainers to study manual osteopathy. This has become such a successful phenomenon that NAO is receiving many applications from personal trainers.
Soon most gyms in North America will have manual osteopaths/personal trainers on site for their members. This is another way NAO is expanding osteopathy. No other osteopathic college in history has ever done so much for osteopathy. NAO is the single most reason osteopathy is now offered worldwide to millions of patients.

This field has been created by National Academy of Osteopathy. This is one of the ideas taught to students by NAO professor Dr Pourgol in his “Creating a Million Dollar Practice” lecture series.

    • Osteopathy in South Korea

Nao Seoul Osteopathic treatments are in high demand in South Korea. Patients seem to enjoy osteopathic treatments and it is a well established, well reimbursed type of treatment within the insurance system in South Korea.
Osteopaths in South Korea charge anywhere from $50 US (per hour) to $300 US (for serious cases requiring few hours of osteopathic rehabilitation) for osteopathic treatments which is paid by most private insurers in South Korea (such as Signa, Aetna, SOS Alliance, & Blue Shield). South Korean public national health insurance pays for osteopathic treatments if done by a physiotherapist, Medical Doctor or an Oriental Medical Doctor. The payment rate by government varies depending on who provides the osteopathic treatment. It is the highest if the treatment is done by a medical doctor. The payment is $5 US per osteopathic treatment if done by a physiotherapist.

Osteopaths who are not a licensed health professionals can open a clinic in South Korea but are not permitted to provide treatments to South Korean citizens. They can however provide osteopathic treatments to foreigners. There are a number osteopaths there who only treat foreigners in Seoul as there is a large US military base near Seoul.

He has started to represent National University of Medical Sciences (NUMSS) as well in his admission offices. And He is opening soon admission offices for the NAO & NUMSS in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan & Vietnam. We wish him success and are honoured to have graduates like him.
We keep expanding by partnering with our graduates. We feel our graduates are the best way to expand osteopathic education internationally. We are so proud of our graduates. Without them we would not be the number one provider of osteopathic education in the world.
      Thank you Mr Lee.

Manual osteopath; Ms. Ashrafunnissa Janmohammad, DO(MP), a 2013 Canadian graduate of NAO is the owner of these two admission offices in Pakistan & London. • Famous hockey play of Maple Leafs returns to hockey thanks to osteopathic treatments

"In October of 2010, while playing for the Nashville Predators of the NHL, I suffered my second major concussion. The post-concussion symptoms were drastic, and forced me out for the entire 2010-2011 season. Hope was dim, until I underwent osteopathy treatment. The results were evidenced by the speed at which I was able to return to my job, and life. I am grateful to this method of treatment, and would encourage those close to me to seek an osteopath for any of their treatment needs."Matthew Lombardig for the Nashville Predators of the NHL, I suffered my second major concussion. Just after three treatments, his condition greatly improved and continued his treatment until he was able to return to training camp and then ultimately return to play with his team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. The doctors gave him the green light. Matthew is a high caliber athlete, considered to be one of the fastest players in the league. He returned to the game with his full abilities. Thanks to his talent, he scored the first goal of the season.

    • World Osteopathy Day

As a result of tireless work of Dr Shahin Pourgol for suggesting a World Osteopathy Day and collaboration between a number of osteopathy organizations, osteopaths, and osteopathy students, we are pleased to announce that June 22nd has been chosen and named “World Osteopathy Day”.
For over 130 years osteopathy has done so much to help human beings have a better quality of life and it deserve a day of its own as recognition of its contribution to human society worldwide. At 10AM on June 22, 1874 in Baldwin, Kansas (USA), the 46 years old Dr Andrew Taylor Still founded osteopathy. Dr Shahin Pourgol recommended this day in oppose to Dr Still’s date of birth (August 06, 1828) as the World Osteopathy Day and his suggestion was accepted by the majority.
Dr Pourgol is bringing a private member bill to the Canadian parliament to request the government of Canada officially recognize June 22nd as the World Osteopathy Day. International Osteopathic Association has committed to do the same with parliaments of a number of other countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
